Mary Adler (Mckenna Grace) is seven years old and, following the death of her mother, lives in Tampa, Florida, with her uncle Frank (Chris Evans). On the first day of school, teacher Bonnie Stevenson (Jenny Slate) notices the little girl’s particular penchant for mathematics. Shortly thereafter, Mary gets a scholarship to a private school attended by child prodigies.

Frank is reluctant to the idea because he would like his niece to have a simple childhood and hopes for a different path from that followed by other family members, who are also gifted. Mary’s talent, in fact, is hereditary. Mary’s mother, Diane, was also a luminary. She has spent her life trying to solve the Navier-Stokes equations, a worry for all mathematicians. For her a real mission that led her first to exasperation and then to suicide when her daughter was only six months old. And Frank has been Mary’s legal guardian ever since.

He enters the story with a straight leg Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan), Frank and Diane’s mother. He drags his son to court to get custody of her niece and have her move to Massachusetts. He doesn’t want the little girl’s talent to go to waste and he dreams of a life of study and dedication for her.

Frank finds himself forced to appear at the hearing and, after an exhausting back and forth, takes lawyer Greg Cullen’s (Glenn Plummer) advice and gives up. His economic resources are nothing compared to those of his mother, who would still put a spoke in his wheels. Mary packs her bags and moves about a half hour’s drive from Frank, who still retains the right to visit her. When she turns twelve, her granddaughter will decide who to live with. However, Mary does not fully understand what is happening around her and her removal from her uncle’s house causes her great trauma. She feels abandoned and doesn’t want to meet him anymore.

The plot changes direction when Mary discovers that she cannot keep the kitten Fred, of whom she was very fond, with her. Frank goes to the shelter where the cat was about to be put down: he was taken there because someone in Mary’s new house is allergic to cats. Frank He thus understands that his mother Evelyn – allergic to cats – has moved to the home of Mary’s foster family. She therefore continues to follow her niece’s education, effectively violating the agreement.

Disappointed by the mother’s behavior and worried about the fate of her granddaughter, he confronts Evelyn and confesses the whole truth about Diana to her. Evelyn can’t believe her ears: her biggest dream was that her daughter would solve the problem.

Now Frank is in control of the situation. In exchange, she will grant him custody of Mary. Evelyn is thus forced to compromise.
