Educació will try to respond to the demand but warns that not all students will be able to take this modality
The Department, ready to recover the elective of Philosophy in 4th year of ESO and to debate the term of ‘En procés de assoliment’
Ball to the ground all those students who are now in 4th of ESO and who have been interested in the new General Baccalaureate which will be implemented in Catalonia next course 2022/23 within the framework of the new curriculum, the draft of which was advanced by EL PERIÓDICO this past Monday. Only about twenty centers will offer this mode. Which? well those newly createdstart from scratch, and those who have already started working on competency-based education model. Most of these centers will be publicly owned, although there may be concerted and private ones, and they will be distributed by school zones.
The forecast of the Department of Education is that with a view to the Saló de l’Ensenyament, which will be held from March 16 to 20, the chosen centers will have already been informed so that they will be able to offer this General Baccalaureate and they will be able to give it to meet both in the Saló, as well as in the open days and for pre-registration (from April 20 to 26).
No demand estimation
education does not have a demand estimation that this new Baccalaureate modality will have, more open and aimed at those students who are still not clear about what they want to study or those who are already thinking of taking a Higher Level Training Cycle. Pre-registration will serve as a guide to see how many students are interested in this option.
If demand exceeds supply, the department will manage how to respond to those requests to the extent possible. Education sources have already admitted, however, that not all students will be able to do it.
More open mode
The General Baccalaureate will be configured by the student according to their interests and concerns. It will not be as closed as the rest of the modalities but it does require certain courses subjects. Thus, according to the draft of the new curriculum, in the 1st year of Baccalaureate, the student must “compulsorily” take General Mathematics and two more subjects that must be chosen from among all the modality subjects offered by the center. “This offer must include the subject of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Business Activity of the modality”, adds the draft.
You will also be able to choose the annual electives provided for in the draft: Biomedicine, Business Operation, Training and Personal and Professional Orientation, Classical World, Programming, Psychology and Second Foreign Language. And among the quarterly electives, you can choose between Current Scientific Challenges, Literary Creation, Applied Mathematics, Social Issues, Audiovisual Communication, Robotics and Citizenship, Politics and Law.
Likewise, in the 2nd year, the student must also “compulsorily” take General Sciences and two more subjects from among all the modalities that the center has, in addition to the electives. Here, the offer must include the subject Cultural and Artistic Movements.
The curriculum allows that “in order to favor the achievement of competences, the centers can make the curriculum more flexible, so that the student can take fewer subjects per year. This implies that the Baccalaureate can lengthen, with a “maximum duration of four years”. In any case, this “flexible” option will require the recommendation of the teaching team and the agreement of the student and the family. Likewise, this will imply the elaboration of an individualized support plan.
As EL PERIÓDICO has already advanced, starting next year the competency-based education model will also reach the Baccalaureate. The idea is that it be “open, flexible, competent, guiding and facilitating”. There will be more optional subjects, it will be possible for the student to take units of training cycles, languages at the Escola Oficial de Idiomas and higher studies in dance and music and have them counted in their file. Educació is finishing outlining the mark with which it will be validated, since until now, for languages or music and dance, the maximum mark was 5, with which the student did not benefit much.
