The gas price differences in Germany are so huge

By Sebastian Geisler

The Germans groan under moon prices for their expensive gas. In the last twelve months, the mega gas price quake was particularly violent: prices rose by more than 80 percent on average. In parts of Germany even more than 90 percent!

But there are huge price differences between the federal states. Gas for a family in Bremen costs around 760 euros less per year than the national average – and even 1051 euros less than in the expensive gas state of Saxony-Anhalt.

City-states with the lowest gas prices

Across Germany, gas currently costs 3,558 euros for an annual consumption of 20,000 kilowatt hours.

► In the city states, prices are well below average: In Bremen the same amount of gas costs 2,800 euros, which is 21 percent less than the national average. Gas is also relatively cheap in Berlin (3121 euros), Hamburg (3173 euros).

Also Schleswig Holstein (3447 euros) is one of the countries with cheaper gas.

The gas price shock hit Saxony-Anhalt particularly hard, at EUR 3,851 (eight percent more than the national average). The prices are also above average in Saxony (3739 euros), North Rhine-Westphalia (3737 euros) and Thuringia (3732 euros).

Why is gas so cheap in Bremen? The basic supplier offers a particularly low tariff, explains energy expert Thorsten Storck from Verivox.

He to BILD: “The grid fees are primarily responsible for the price differential between the federal states. They are charged for the use and maintenance of the gas lines as well as for the provision and reading of the meters and vary from region to region”.

Price increases between 43 and 92 percent

Over the course of the year, gas has become more expensive nationwide by an average of 83 percent. In Saxony-Anhalt there was an even stronger price increase of 92 percent. In NRW, gas prices rose by 90 percent within a year, in Brandenburg by 87 percent, in Thuringia and Rhineland-Palatinate by 86 percent each.

︎ In some federal states, the price increases were much more moderate. Gas prices increased the least in Bremen (plus 43 percent). But also in Berlin (plus 60 percent), in Saarland (plus 69 percent) and in Hamburg (plus 71 percent) the price increase was below the national average.

Methodology: The average gas costs were determined using the Verivox consumer price index for a household with an average consumption of 20,000 kWh of natural gas. It takes into account the prices of the local basic suppliers as well as the new customer prices of the most important national suppliers.
