The four latest fashion trends: ‘You see it on the street: the mafia woman is back’ | Fashion

The international fashion weeks are in full swing and the trend watchers on TikTok have defined four clear trends that will determine the fashion image this year. A clean, natural look is out. In 2024, the ‘mafia woman’ will make her comeback and we will wear polo shirts again.

TikTok is no longer just a channel for watching dances, the social media platform has become one of the most important players when it comes to fashion predictions. It is a place where the big fashion houses, the street and all conceivable subcultures come together to show themselves and find inspiration. And when it comes to fashion, the verdict is clear. We are saying goodbye to the flashy brand logos that have dominated the fashion scene in recent years. A trend that became popular during the Covid years when people mainly spent their income on clothing and interior design. But now that we’re dealing with a recession, two wars and an unabated climate crisis, showing off flashy logos seems to have become a lot less ‘cool’.

Also the clean girl aesthetic in other words, a healthy, natural look is out. The ‘fresh girl’ trend was about minimal makeup, neutral colors (lots of beige and gray), yoga pants and hair in a tight bun. Above all, it had to look very pure, yet beautifully polished. The hype of which stars such as Sophia Richie and Hailey Bieber were the figureheads, went hand in hand with the sad beige babytrend among young parents. But the fashion tide seems to be turning here too. These are the TikTok style lessons for 2024.

“Clean girl is out; mob wife era is in, okay?” is shouted in the TikTok video that went so viral at the beginning of this year that even The Godfatherdirector Francis Ford Coppola confirmed on Instagram: “I hear mafia women are making a comeback.” The mob wife aesthetic was introduced early this year around the same time as the iconic Mafia series The Sopranos celebrated its 25th anniversary. This might make you think it is a marketing stunt.

But not only does HBO deny having anything to do with the prediction, the signals that the ‘mafia woman’ will really determine the fashion image are strong enough to take this trend seriously. “I had no idea about that anniversary,” Kayla Trivieri, the 28-year-old American who made the video, told Harper’s Bazaar. “I just mentioned what I see happening on the streets in New York.”

This trend takes a clear swing from the neutral and minimalist clean girl, to a dramatic and daring woman. At less is more the mafia woman has no message, she likes to show that she is well taken care of. Think of fur coats, tiger prints, from head to toe in black, leather, big and teased hair, existing cleavage, long red nails or a french manicure, big sunglasses and an expensive watch. This trend is about confidently showing your femininity. A bit vulgar is allowed. Be inspired by iconic mafia women such as ‘Carmela Soprano’, Michelle Pfeiffer Scarface and Sharon Stone Casino.

The term was coined by Pinterest for their trend predictions for 2024 and takes your quirky grandpa as a source of inspiration. Think of large knitted cardigans, spencers, tweed, corduroy, loafers, large sneakers, striking retro items and preferably mismatched to behave. The trend is embraced by stars such as Bella Hadid and Harry Styles and is about showing your individuality and cherishing special vintage pieces as a counterpoint to the fast fashion industry.

Quiet luxury

Literally translated as ‘silent luxury’, the revival of this trend is the counterpart to the ‘logomania’ that many designers have bombarded us with in recent years. Although radiating ‘luxury’ always seems to remain important in the fashion world, this trend is mainly about doing so as subtly as possible. So luxury that you see in the form of materials, excellent cuts and inconspicuous logos. Silent luxury refers to ‘old money’, the real elite who have no need to be a designer’s poster boy and demonstrate good taste in a more refined way. Only an expert or someone with an eye for beautiful things will know that your white shirt is a shirt from The Row is worth 800 euros. The cashmere sweater returns, as do the blazer and classic handbags. Investing in timeless pieces is the mantra.

The preppy or college=look is also making a comeback. Designers like Gucci and Miu Miu already dressed their models in polo and rugby shirts during the shows of their spring/summer 2024 collections, breathing new life into this classic tacky style.
