Russia expects that European countries will not play with fire on the issue of a possible blockade of the Kaliningrad region by blocking the borders, said Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, reports TASS.

“I really hope that common sense in Europe will not allow any games to be played around Kaliningrad. I think many people understand that this is playing with fire,” he said.

The Kaliningrad region is the westernmost region of Russia. Geographically, it is separated from the country and exists as an enclave in the Baltics. In the south, the region borders with Poland, and in the north and east – with Lithuania.

On April 4, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis admitted that the country’s authorities could close the borders with Russia and Belarus against the backdrop of the situation in Ukraine. This would not allow the inhabitants of the region to leave the Kaliningrad region through the southern borders. Later Latvian Minister of Defense Artis Pabriks declaredthat the Baltic countries should completely close their borders with Russia, since it is in this case that the decision will have the greatest effect.
