The issue of UN peacekeepers in Donbass is finally closed and is not discussed, said Petr Ilyichev, director of the Department of International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reports “RIA News”.
“There is no need. The peacekeepers will not solve anything in the intra-Ukrainian conflict. Ukrainians need to talk to the LPR and DPR, ”this is how Ilyichev answered the question whether Moscow considers it necessary to send UN peacekeepers to the Russian-Ukrainian border.
“The implementation of the Minsk agreements and resolution 2202 is being discussed, nothing is said about peacekeepers,” the diplomat added.
The issue of the possibility of introducing an international peacekeeping contingent to the Donbass has been repeatedly raised by various parties to the conflict, but it has not been possible to agree on the conditions for the presence of foreign troops there.
Four years ago, Russia itself took the initiative to send peacekeepers to the Donbass. Then Vladimir Putin said that Russia supports the deployment of an international peacekeeping mission to the Donbass to ensure the security of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission, which has been operating there since March 2014. At the same time, he formulated the main Russian conditions: the task of the special forces should only be to protect the employees of the OSCE special monitoring mission, they should be deployed only on the line of demarcation between the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the military units of the self-proclaimed DPR and LPR, access to the border of Russia and Ukraine, which Kiev now does not controls, they should not have, and Kiev should conduct negotiations on the mandate of the mission directly with representatives of the DPR and LPR. However, Kiev criticized this initiative. The Ukrainian authorities insisted that the peacekeepers should also take control of the uncontrolled border between the self-proclaimed republics and Russia. This position was also supported by Washington.
