The Flemish Government is buying three nature reserves in De Haan

More specifically, it concerns three nature areas that are now in the hands of the Flemish government: one on the Vosseslag (large piece purchased for nature development), a second on Zwarte Kiezel (military domain) and the last one in Wenduine (pump house and water tower).

Zuhal Demir was clear about the government’s intentions: “The intention is to mainly do nature restoration here, especially hydrological interventions. Very important with those long periods of drought and periods with a lot of rain, that we also have room to collect water.”

Respect for open space

Parts of the nature reserves will be made available to the public after restoration. According to Demir, it is important that Flanders has an eye for open space: “Not everything has to be built up on the coast, especially high-rise buildings. Some municipalities are really talking about it.”
