Roxanne very proud of her Mathieu van der Poel: “I really almost died”
Roxanne Bertels, Mathieu van der Poel’s girlfriend, was visibly emotional after his triumph in Vlaanderens Mooiste. “This is a dream, the icing on the cake for all his hard work. He has been awarded this so much, I am really very happy,” said Roxanne, who experienced the final alongside Corinne Poulidor, Mathieu’s mother and daughter of Raymond, who passed away last year. “We saw Mathieu in five different places. Half an hour before the finish we came here (Oudenaarde, ed.) and then it was nail biting until the last second. I really almost died, I think. It was a very nice duel between Wout and Mathieu and the victory is absolutely deserved. I really didn’t dare to dream this, this is fantastic. This does something to a person,” said Roxanne, who confirmed that the belt is now going off. “Mathieu now has a period of rest, he is going to enjoy it very much. But hopefully we will celebrate this at home first.”
