Tomorrow, Thursday 9 June, thousands of students will hear whether they have passed their school diploma. On this day, students from the VMBO (theoretical and mixed learning path), HAVO and VWO receive the results of the central written exam. In addition, this year, just like last year, there is another result date: students of the pre-vocational secondary education framework and basis will hear on Wednesday 15 June whether they have passed.
The results of the central exams are always a festive moment, with flags all over the country. Normally everyone who takes a regular exam will hear the results on the same day, but not this year. Due to corona, students are allowed to spread their exams over two periods this year. As a result, there is less time to standardize the exams, or to determine how many points you have a pass for. This is done by special standardization experts. They cannot standardize all exams in one go in a short time. They have to start with the paper exams, because the students taking these exams need to know if they have to retake subjects. For the digital exams, schools themselves determine when the resits are, so there is more time.
Two holidays
Minister Dennis Wiersma (Primary and Secondary Education): ‘I understand very well that many students, parents and teachers of pre-vocational secondary education and the basics are disappointed that they have to wait a week longer for the results. I am also very disappointed about this, but unfortunately there is no other way. I assume that next year the results date will be the same day for everyone. And this year we will work together to ensure that 15 June also becomes a holiday.’
countdown clock
Minister Wiersma will pay attention to the successful students on both days. On 9 June he will go to Develstein College in Zwijndrecht to surprise students and raise the flag. From this moment on, a virtual countdown will also run until the other release date, on June 15.
Flag Month
There are also young people and adults who do not (any longer) attend a regular secondary school, but who nevertheless take exams in one or more subjects. As every year, these state exam candidates receive their results at different times. There is not 1 result date for the state exams: candidates will hear after the last completed exam whether they have passed. State exam candidates have to take college exams (similar to school exams) after the central exams, which can continue until the beginning of August. These students retake central exams in the third period in mid-August. Due to the different results moments for state exam candidates, a so-called flag month is organized in July, just like in previous years. As soon as the result is known for an individual candidate or all candidates from a school have heard their result, the flag can be raised.
