The Finals first game between the Golden State Warriors and the Boston Celtics was the most watched in the last three years on US national television, with a maximum of 13 million viewers, the NBA reported Monday. The ABC and ESPN networks, which broadcast the meeting on television in the United States, recorded an average of 11.9 million viewers.
This data, which refers only to the opening game of the NBA Finals, improves the numbers registered in 2019 in the Golden State Warriors-Toronto Raptors, in 2020 in the Los Angeles Lakers-Miami Heat and in 2021 in the Phoenix Suns -Milwaukee Bucks. In particular, there were 37% more viewers compared to 2021 and 55% more compared to the 2020 Finals, which were played behind closed doors in the Orlando bubble, according to NBA data.
Also, there was 135 million views on social media of the NBA, an absolute record for the first game of a Finals.
The match saw the Boston Celtics triumph on the road against the Golden State Warriors 120-108 at the Chase Center. The series is now tied 1-1, after the Warriors won this Sunday in the second game of this best-of-seven series. The third meeting will be played in Boston this Wednesday.
