Jilou is the new German champion in breaking. The Berliner won the B-Girls final against Pauline 2-1.

For 30-year-old Jilou it was the second German championship title after 2021. The Freiburg-born athlete was overjoyed after her triumph and celebrated it with a spontaneous somersault. After a high-class final, Pauline was left behind and had to settle for silver. Previously, Melina had secured the bronze medal against Sona after losing the semifinals against Jilou in a duel for third place.

Jilou: “”It was incredibly exciting and high-class”

“I put an incredible amount of pressure on myself. Yesterday, a lot of tears came because I was under pressure. Today they come because the pressure is off,” said Jilou after the ARD competition. “It was incredibly exciting and top-class.”

What is breaking?

Breaking is a modern dance style. This was formed from the basic building blocks of the “funk era” and has its roots in the Bronx in New York in the 1970s. The athletes compete against each other in so-called “battles”, which are part of the cultural heritage of hip-hop. Round after round, after one-on-one duels in a knockout process, a jury decides who will progress and ultimately take the German championship crown.

Breaking has a bright future as the sport is set to feature at the 2024 Olympics. Breaking athletes are referred to as “b-boys”, “b-girls” or “breakers” where the “b” stands for “break” because they perform their dance steps during the instrumental breaks in a song.
