After a whopping eleven seasons, the finale of the zombie series “The Walking Dead” is now history. TECHBOOK author Marlene Polywka got emotional towards the end – and is still very happy that the series is finally over.
The final episode of The Walking Dead is very aptly titled “Rest In Peace.” Because not only the series will do that in the future, but also many of its characters – in the truest sense of the word. At the end of the blockbuster zombie production, there was another proper death and thus a goodbye to the ensemble series.

At this point follows the obligatory one Spoiler alert. If you still want to see the finale completely blank, you should skip this paragraph.
The final episode of The Walking Dead lasted over an hour. And that was a good thing, because there were still a few open questions to be clarified. Of course, the resolution of the conflict in the Commonwealth is central. At the end of a series like this, viewers always want to know exactly how the story ends for the characters they have grown fond of – the finale also delivers that with a wide range of emotions. There’s also an epic amount of zombies, political intrigue, family drama and a few sad goodbyes.
In the Commonwealth, the usual suspects who have accompanied us through so many seasons now manage to convict the corrupt elite. You can then successfully defend the community against a zombie attack. A year later, we see that the Commonwealth, with its thousands of survivors, is now led by the trio of Carol (Melissa McBride), Ezekiel (Khary Payton) and Michael (Michael James Shaw). The Alexandria prison camp has also become a thriving settlement once again, as has the once-ruined Hilltop colony, now led by Maggie.
Unfortunately, those who can no longer live to see this hopeful outcome are Jules (Alex Sgambati) – whose death unfortunately comes a little short -, Luke (Dan Fogler) and Rosita (Christian Serratos). All three die more or less directly as a result of the walker attack. Otherwise, a surprising number of characters made it to the end of “The Walking Dead” alive. And we even see both Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Guira) for a short time, as well as the numerous deceased from previous seasons in a montage.
On a personal level, Lauren Cohan’s role as Maggie didn’t entirely resolve her conflict with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Although she offers him coexistence, she also makes it clear that she will not forgive him for killing her husband. This also directly teases one of the planned spin-offs.
Plenty of spin-offs planned
In fact, a total of three spin-offs are planned so far, which more or less all find their place in the finale of “The Walking Dead”. With “Fear the Walking Dead” and “The Walking Dead: World Beyond” there are already two offshoots of the successful series. “Tales. of the Walking Dead” was also released in 2020, but not in Germany so far.
Probably the most prominent spin-off of the future will probably be around Rick and Michonne be. As hinted at in the finale, both characters survived. Rick was taken away by the mysterious Civic Republic in season 9. Now his wife Michonne is looking for him with exciting armor. The series should even start in 2023; both main actors return to their roles.
And a fan favorite too Daryl will probably have a series of its own. Actually, Carol should also play an important role in it. With her farewell in the “The Walking Dead” finale, that’s now – also officially confirmed – off the table for the time being. The silent fighter apparently goes to France in the spin-off to research the origin of the zombie virus. He also seems to be looking for Michonne and Rick, so maybe a crossover awaits us?
With Maggie and Negan As already mentioned, two other main characters get an offshoot. The tension between the two after Negan’s Maggie’s husband Glenn (Steven Yeun) is far from resolved, even though they now appear to be working together on Hilltop. In their spin-off “The Walking Dead: Dead City”, which is also scheduled for release in 2023, the two apparently end up in New York. There they want to find out if there are any other survivors.

“Hardly any other series has polarized as much as “The Walking Dead” in recent years. Honestly, it’s getting harder for me to formulate a clear opinion about this series with each passing season. It starts out so great, then gets really unbearable at times, then good again, then kind of boring. It got pretty tiring over the years and I have to admit that the series lost me on the way from time to time. I never would have thought that the finale would grip me so emotionally. Despite the fact that the message is always the same (a glimmer of hope on the horizon, maybe more survivors, solidarity, etc.). the makers skillfully bring many loose ends together. That’s why I’m personally really happy that “The Walking Dead” is finally over. I can live well with this degree, the stories are told to me.
