The women’s lions are now playing to save face at the World Cup, after the team lost scandalously to the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Finland’s only goal at this stage is to secure fifth place in the tournament, which would guarantee a place in next year’s games in the upper preliminary series, i.e. in the A group.
From that group, all teams advance to the playoffs, and they also get a more favorable opponent.
However, standing in the way of the goal is Sweden, who tormented the Women’s Lions well into the second round. Approaching the third period, the situation is only 2-1 for Finland, although the shooting statistics show murderous figures of 24-7.
Sweden served Finland a shock treatment right at the beginning of the match when it moved Anna Kjellbin took the lead with a line shot after only 48 seconds of play.
Jenni Hiirikoski scored an equalizer for Naisleijon, however, and Kiira Yrjänen moved the team to the driver’s place in the second set.
