The federal government has imposed a twelve-month waiting period on Stephan Mayer, the former parliamentary state secretary in the Federal Ministry of the Interior. This was confirmed by the Federal Chancellery on request. This means that Mayer can take over his position as Vice President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) will not compete for the time being. Mayer was in Weimar on December 4, 2021 at the DOSB-Elected to the Executive Committee at the General Assembly.
Mayer surprised, but apparently informed
the CSUMembers of the Bundestag were surprised by the report. “Since I have neither an official decision from the left-liberal federal government nor a relevant justification in this matter at this point in time, I cannot, with the best will in the world, take a position on the matter.”, he explained when asked. “However, I think it is an outrageous and strange occurrence that media representatives are obviously being informed by the federal government about the decision to take a waiting period before I am the person directly affected.”
The Federal Press Office, in turn, said that Mayer was informed immediately after the decision. “The decision of the federal government was sent to Mr. Mayer by post immediately after the decision of the federal government in the cabinet meeting on January 5, 2022”, it said on request
DOSB-Opinion: None
the DOSB was unable to comment on the process later on Thursday. The umbrella organization of German sports is again in turbulence as a result of the decision. Mayer’s chair on the Presidium cannot be filled unless he resigns. Mayer could then stand for re-election at the regular general meeting next December.
Should surprise him DOSB neither does the decision. Because it was clear before the election that Mayer’s commitment would be checked. Since 2015, ministers and state secretaries have had to notify the Federal Chancellery of future activities in accordance with Section 6a of the Federal Ministers Act. The independent waiting period committee advises and then recommends whether a so-called “cooldown period” is necessary for them. Such a waiting period can last up to 18 months. This also applies to honorary posts.
The Upper Bavarian and his supporters, such as Gymnastics President Alfons Hölzl, DFB-Interim President Rainer Koch or the spokesman for the central associations, Ingo Weiss, sold the application for “release” around Mayer’s election in December as a mere formality. However, there was criticism of Mayer’s efforts beforehand.
DOSB-Restart becomes a stutter start
At first, Mayer was concerned with that DOSB– applied for the presidency, but then surprisingly gave the association a basket at the candidate show in Düsseldorf in November. He was then chosen as the vice-candidate by Team Germany and others. And voted in anticipation of the requested release. At the same time, the member of the Bundestag was sent to the Sports Committee of the Bundestag, where the Union faction even elected him their spokesman.
The official will-o’-the-wisps of the 48-year-old CSU-Man caused irritation for many. And sparked fierce criticism. But neither the viceroy-makers from the associations nor the delegates cared about that. Now the new beginning at DOSB However, already back to the stutter start.
