Paul Weller has The Cure frontman Robert Smith during an interview for the December issue of Record Collector publicly criticized and called a “fat cunt with lipstick”.
This is how Weller’s sharp statements came about
When the magazine claimed that one of the songs on Noel Gallagher’s forthcoming album sounded suspiciously like 1980’s The Cure classic “A Forest,” The Jam frontman responded with a mixture of “disbelief and disgust,” like the author wrote in the article.
“Really?!” Weller replied. “I can not stand them. The fat cunt with the lipstick and all that crap. He’s my age, isn’t he? He’s a fucking asshole. I do not like him. There you have it. I would work with him – then fuck him slap him or something.”
The Cure broke into The Jam’s studio
Smith revealed to Rolling Stone in 2004that Weller’s former band The Jam unintentionally helped them record their debut album “Three Imaginary Boys” (1979): The formation sneaked into The Jam’s studio at night and secretly used their equipment to produce their work.
Additionally, Smith had claimed in an interview back in 1985 that punk wasn’t a political movement and that people were just tired of listening to bands like Yes and Genesis and wanted something to dance to. At the same time, Smith had also commented on the punk music of The Jam and frontman Paul Weller: “You have to be really stupid to believe someone like Paul Weller.”
Possibly, among other things, these events could have led to Weller’s bad image and the critical statements he made.
