Before Die Fantastischen Vier stood on a stack of Euro pallets for the first time on July 7, 1989 and performed their tracks, they were already rumbling around in the Stuttgart underground as the Terminal Team. In 2019, the pioneers of German hip-hop will celebrate their 30th anniversary. You should know the following 5 facts.
1. That one!?!
When Smudo, Hausmarke, Thomas D and And.Ypsilon were still hopping through Stuttgart as young hops, the German rap that is so ubiquitous today wasn’t really there yet. Although there were one or two formations that were dedicated to German chanting – The Fantastischen Vier were not the first – but it took the four boys from Baden-Württemberg to stir up a lot of dust with German rap.
The track “Die Da!?!”, released in 1992, was not only the first opportunity for German rap to make it into the charts, “Die Da!?!” was also groundbreaking and paved the way for all formations that devoted themselves to German-language texts should come after the Fantastic Four.
2. The infancy of the Euro pallet revolution
The universe of the Europallet includes: hand-made pallet beds, entire furnishings in hip cafés, tailor-made benches for the two-square-meter balcony. It’s hard to get more functional and adaptable. The Fanta 4 also benefited from the wooden boards nailed together over the course of their career. In fact, a good soul cobbled together some Euro pallets so that Smudo & Co. could make their first appearance. And this self-built stage was located in a former kindergarten.
3. Track 14
Not present in the charts does not mean non-existent. Although German hip-hop had not yet been popularized, the associated scene definitely existed. Scratching then became scratching, rap became chanting. And then came the first German hip-hop sampler called “Krauts with Attitude”. The compilation is said to characterize the hip-hop scene at the beginning of the 90s and to be a fairly representative reflection of the groups that existed at the time and the hip-hop world at the time.
Of course, Die Fantastischen Vier also have a place in the compilation: the equipped collector hears “Now it’s off” from their 1991 debut when they skip to position 14.
4. “Turn off the alarm clock first”
Who doesn’t know it: the alarm clock rings in the morning, but the snooze button is far too tempting to really wake up from the heat at the first chime of the bell. But rarely does it become a stage name that lasts so much that no one seems to be aware of the real name. Michael Bernd Schmidt also struggled with annoying and dream-killing alarm clocks in the morning before school, gave in, and probably earned the nickname sleaze due to his morning rush. At some point, Schmuddel became Smudo, and as Smudo he became famous and infamous.
5. Big city
There is also a song on their debut called “Big City”. “It’s where everyone gets going,” describe the Fanta 4. The group originally comes from Stuttgart, but big cities, the speed, the superficiality can quickly destroy you. That’s why Thomas D retreated to the country years ago and lives in his temple there, enjoys nature and welcomes guests every now and then.
He is vegan and Thomas D is committed to the environment and nature conservation. Among other things, with his song “Prayer to the Planet”.
