The eye-catcher on the Kunstroute is the tapestry about the war in Ukraine
In the old library of Kortemark you can see blue glass art from the Netherlands, but also work by the Ukrainian Olga Radionova, made with textiles from Ukrainian soldiers at the front. Last year, more than 3,000 visitors came to the Kunstroute. The eye-catcher of this 22nd edition is the ‘Ukrainian tapestry’: a strip of old linen with scenes from the war between Russia and Ukraine. The work is now 16 meters long and continues to grow.
Irma Frijlink, textile artist: “It is inspired by the Bayeux tapestry (historic tapestry from the 11th century). With scenes about Ukraine at the top, Russia at the bottom. And in between you see the low points that take place in Ukraine. That sign me with the sewing machine. My needle is my pencil and then it arises. I used old linen on purpose because it stains. War is dirty. I will continue it until the end of the war. I hope that will be very soon are.”
