According to a recent study produced by Thales, 85% of French people say they are in favor to the establishment of the future European digital identity wallet. A device that will allow you to identify yourself and exchange personal data with public authorities from a smartphone.
The digital identity wallet will be officially rolled out in 2024
Presented by Margrethe Vestager and Thierry Breton in 2021, two European commissioners specializing in digital technology, this system will allow citizens of the Old Continent to prove their identity and share electronic documents from their cell phone. Its deployment is scheduled for 2023 as part of a first test phase. Then, by 2024, all Member States will have to offer this digital identity wallet to their residents.

The Thales survey, carried out among 2,000 French people, shows that the French are very favorable to the deployment of this European digital identity wallet. Conducted in December 2021, the study shows that 85% of respondents say they are ready to use this device. France is also the most enthusiastic country on this subject. The Italians are positioned just behind. They responded 75% positively to the adoption of the digital identity wallet.
Data protection at the heart of the device
Unsurprisingly, the proportion of people interested largely depends on age. The study also notes that it depends on “experience with national ID systems and digital wallet providers, such as Apple, Google and Samsung”. It’s good the security component that reassures the French. Respondents understood that the digital identity wallet will help strengthen the protection of our personal data.
