The EU convenes an extraordinary summit on May 30 and 31

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, announced this Friday a extraordinary summit of the heads of state and government of the European Union (EU) for the next May 30 and 31, in which They will talk about defense, energy and the war in Ukraine.

Michel announced the meeting on his Twitter account, noting that his call had been discussed at the informal summit of European leaders in mid-March in Versailles, France, whose agenda had already been dominated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In the last ordinary summit of the leadersin Brussels on March 24 and 25, Moscow’s military aggression against kyiv and the impact of the conflict on European defense, as well as the increase in energy prices throughout the European Union, were also on the agenda.

In the energy chapter, the European Commission (EC) expects by then to have presented its plan to completely divest itself of Russian energy sources in the next few years.

In fact, one of the sanctions recently approved by the European Union this Friday was the embargo on Russian coal exports, although there is still no consensus among the member states to go further and also prohibit the purchase of oil or gas.
