The EU Commission wants more information from Amazon about consumer protection

The online giant Amazon must provide the EU Commission with more information about its consumer protection measures. As the authority announced on Wednesday, it had sent a formal request to Amazon based on the new EU law on digital services. This must be answered within three weeks. If Amazon answers the questions incorrectly, incompletely or misleadingly, fines may be imposed.

Specifically, Amazon should, for example, provide information about how the sale of illegal products can be prevented. Illegal or non-compliant products are goods such as counterfeit medicines or toys without the necessary security seals. The commission’s request also involves information about Amazon’s system for product recommendations. According to information from EU circles, it should be transparent how recommendations are made.

An Amazon spokeswoman said they were reviewing the application and working closely with the EU Commission. Amazon shares the goal of creating a safe and trustworthy online environment. “We invest significantly in protecting our shop from malicious actors,” said the spokeswoman.

Amazon, Facebook, Google and many others must meet stricter requirements under the new law – the Digital Services Act (DSA). Online marketplaces, for example, are obliged to remove counterfeit products or dangerous toys as best as possible and to warn customers. (dpa)
