The essential resort collections of menswear 2023

Trendstop brings FashionUnited readers a first look at the menswear collections that have hit the runways for Resort 2023 season.

The men’s resort season kicked off with designers focusing on elevated forms of casualwear in fresh and exciting ways. Deconstruction, embellishment and hybrids of formal, casual and streetwear bring new life to classics like t-shirts and denim. The discussion on gender issues continued with feminine details, colors and materials bringing summery pastels, glitter and rich fabrics to the collections.

Dior men

A giant blue wave provided the backdrop for Kim Jones’ resort showcase in Venice Beach, and the California summer vibes continued as guest designer Eli Russell Linnetz partnered with Jones to present a ’90s-inspired collection. A fusion of Dior tailoring and streetwear, wide-leg jackets and skater sneakers have been paired, and the house’s classic saddlebag has been updated with a miniature skater keyring. Sweaters with the slogan “California Couture” spelled out the ethos of the collection, which is a mix of casual and formal wear.

MM6 Maison Margiela

Maison Margiela’s label MM6 also took a relaxed approach, exploring the theme of togetherness by piecing together, cutting and re-stitching garments to offer a fresh take on off-duty wear. Deconstructed t-shirts incorporating pieces from satin shirts and baggy trousers focused on comfort and ease, while proportions in the fitted shirts, skinny jeans and stretch shorts paired with overly chunky thick-soled sneakers and roomy pantyhose ons came into play.

Gucci

Gucci’s men’s collection “Cosmonogies” further explored the boundaries between genders in fashion. A constellation-inspired sparkle was applied to everyday garments like jeans and suits encrusted with crystals, while a lamé coat evoked the Middle Ages with its chainmail-like shimmer. Classic menswear took the form of vintage-inspired trench coats and more casual everyday looks like down coats paired with loose-fitting pants and fisherman sandals. The purple vinyl finish with latex long finger gloves transported the collection back to a world of the universe.
