The end of the last newscast surprised Matti Röngä

Matti Rönkä sets the tone for Iltalehti’s last news broadcast.

– Such a tired buttercup.

Thus Matti Rönkä, 64, describes his feelings after his last news broadcast. Rönkä will anchor his last news broadcast today, February 28, at Half past nine.

Rönkä says that they had a coffee moment at Yle the day before the broadcast, where the staff gave speeches in honor of the news anchor’s last day of work. The media interviews helped to keep Röngä’s thoughts somewhere other than the last broadcast.

In Röngä’s opinion, the broadcast went well for the most part, but he admits that there was a small mistake.

– In the beginning, there was a small technical glitch or misunderstanding with the titles. One vote went wrong, but I don’t know if the viewers noticed it, the man says.

– Yes, for example, a typo in the newspaper or some other mistake is upsetting, but not very much. As a rule, the broadcast went quite smoothly, he emphasizes.

In his last speech, Rönkä urged to cherish the Finnish language. This has received a huge amount of praise from the Finnish people, especially in the X application.

Rönkä reveals that he did not plan his speech for days in advance.

– They say that between half past eight and eight I thought about it. It was agreed that I would say some closing words and I knew there would be some kind of cavalcade video. I didn’t know music, the man confesses.

– I wanted to say something relatively laconic, but appreciative. I wanted a neutral good message that we should get through this together. And reminds to give value to things that seem self-evident, even if they are not, he adds.

In honor of the last broadcast, Yle’s staff drank non-alcoholic sparkling wine. According to Rönkä, the evening continues calmly.

– I’m on my way home. I’m going to watch some good TV recordings, read and eat dinner. But nothing more strange than that, he concludes.

Rönkä started as a news anchor for Yle in the early 2000s. Before that, he worked since 1990 as the news manager of Yle’s TV news. Before coming to Yle, he also worked at MTV, Helsingin Sanomat, Lehtkuva, Radio Ykköse and Insinööriuutinis.
