Huysmans, you say? As in ‘Hermans’, but with ‘house’? It could have just happened, because the French writer who hides behind that name had a Dutch father and originally even a neatly spelled name: Huijsmans. His first name sounded less Dutch: Charles-Marie-Georges. And because he wanted to present himself as a Dutch master who had ended up in Paris, he decided to go through life as a man of letters under the name Joris-Karl Huysmans – which sounded mainly German, but a moan who paid attention to it.
