The City Council and Aguas de Murcia launch five projects thanks to the financing of European funds

He protection environment of the Mar Menor It goes beyond the coastline itself and this is demonstrated by the projects in which the City Council of the capital of the Region is working together with the company Murcian waters to carry out improvements in the purification networks and collectors in various areas of the Campo de Murcia.

The plans that will be implemented have a cost of 1.5 million euros And they will be possible thanks to the financing of the European Next Generation funds, distributed among several municipalities in the Region with the aim of trying to reverse the situation in which the salty lagoon is located.

In total there will be seven the districts of Campo de Murcia in which it is going to act: Lobosillo; Corvera; Gea and Truyols; Baths and Beggar; The Martinez del Puerto; Jerónimo y Avileses and Sucina, as explained to La Opinión Julio García, a technician for Sustainable Development at Aguas de Murcia.

And although at first it may be thought that these territories are far from the coast, the seepage that occurs in the land and its proximity to the Rambla del Albujón make them areas of influence to take into account. To which is added also the benefits that the improvements that are going to be carried out in these seven locations will have for the residents of these territories, which will result in a better quality of life for more than 10,000 residents of Campo de Murcia, indicate municipal sources.

In total, five actions will be carried out: monitoring of effluents at authorized dumping pointstwo new sanitation collectors, rehabilitation of existing ones and installation of photovoltaic generators.

20 million for actions in eight municipalities of the Region

In total, the Plan for Recovery, Transformation and Resilience has allocated 20 million of the Next Generation to the recovery of the Mar Menor, of which 1.5 correspond to the initiatives proposed by the Murcia City Council, while the rest is distributed among the consistories that have also presented projects and among which stand out, in an important way, Los Alcázares and San Javier, with 3.75 million euros each. These amounts are earmarked for interventions to improve the sanitation networks and wastewater treatment. Considering the pressure they exert on the lagoon, according to geographic and population criteria, the distribution is as follows:

  • San Javier 3.75 million.
  • Los Alcazares 3.75 million.
  • Cartagena 3.5 million.
  • San Pedro del Pinatar 3.5 million.
  • Fuente Alamo 1.5 million.
  • Murcia 1.5 million.
  • Torre Pacheco 1.5 million.
  • City Council of La Unión 1 million euros.

Real time monitoring

One of the projects consists of the continuous monitoring of sanitation discharge points in the Mar Menor basin (Gea and Truyols, Sucina, Avileses and Corvera). To this end, continuous measurement systems of the pollutant load of discharges will be installed, to measure turbidity and conductivity, at each authorized discharge point in the Mar Menor basin, so that the existing system will be improved, since it You will be able to control the quality of the discharged effluent in real time.

To this extent they will invest 150,000 euros and thanks to it, there will be real-time control of the quality of the water that is discharged, being able to act immediately if any unusual parameter is detected, says Julio García.

two new collectors

Aguas de Murcia has also planned provide sanitation to the population center of Los Vidales, Lobosillo (in the vicinity of the Rambla del Albujón) through the installation of a collector, pumping station and impulsion. Another second collector will be for the nucleus known as La Granja, also in Lobosillo, since these houses do not have a sanitation network and this is carried out through septic tanks, with the risk of leaks that this implies for the natural environment.

The director of Planning and Works of Aguas de Murcia, Sergio Pascualpoints out that these two collectors will cost around 800,000 euros, half the budget of the five projects.

Collector rehabilitation

Another of the projects to protect the Mar Menor consists of the rehabilitation of collectors using trenchless technology at various points of Corvera, Gea and Truyols, Baños and Mendigo, Los Martínez del Puerto, Jerónimo and Avileses and Sucina. The Aguas de Murcia Sustainable Development technician recalls that “this sanitation network dates back to the 1970-1980s, so there are points where it is in poor condition and has cracks that we must repair to avoid leaks.”

This action will benefit more than 6,500 inhabitants, thanks to the rehabilitation of almost 2,000 meters of pipes, some works that will be carried out with trenchless technology to reduce inconvenience, which allows the collectors to be repaired without the need to break the road, avoiding traffic interruptions, inconvenience to the neighbors and reducing the time spent on the works.

photovoltaic installation

Sergio Pascual also highlights the project for the installation of a photovoltaic generator on the roof of the storm tank of the Hacienda Riquelme urbanization, in Sucina, with an aggregate power of 12.6 kwp, energy that will be used in the self-consumption of the aforementioned installation. According to forecasts, this action will reduce the average energy consumption associated with the improvement and renewal of the projected infrastructure by 10%.
