At present, some of the most powerful observatories study the rings around Saturn. Astronomers have known for some time that the rings slowly erode and end up in Saturn’s atmosphere. Despite this, it is still unclear how fast the ring system is shrinking. Fortunately, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (Webb) will soon investigate this intriguing phenomenon and may offer new insights.
