More space for exhibits and visitors: The Natural History Museum is planning to redesign its building on Invalidenstrasse. The museum’s famous dinosaurs are probably moving for this. The results of an architectural competition were presented on Friday.
The architectural office GMP with Rainer Schmidt Landscape Architects won the first prize. Your design envisages that more exhibition space will be created. Two courtyards are to be built over for this purpose. The new halls allow a tour between the various exhibitions.
One of the halls in courtyard 2 is to be used as a dinosaur hall in the future. The previous dinosaur hall will become the Welcome Hall. At least that’s what the competition winner suggested.
The main entrance in the south on Invalidenstraße is to be made barrier-free. Ramps are planned for this.
Prof. Dieter Janosch, advisor to the museum: “It is a very extensive investment. That’s why the competition was obligatory.” The process is not yet complete, because the competition is only part of the bigger picture. Work has been going on at the museum since 2018.
Construction costs: a whopping 294 million euros! Funded by the federal and state governments. “Everything should be ready by 2032,” is the hope of Managing Director Stephan Junker. Will the museum remain open during the renovation? Still unclear.
