Bachmut may have fallen. Thanks to Rostyslav Likhach (34, nickname Byker) we now know how that battle really went. The Ukrainian soldier has a four-month-old daughter when he has to go to the front near Bachmut at the beginning of this year. This is the diary he writes during that period, often with frozen fingers. Byker describes how a simple nail saves his life, how he tends to his badly injured comrades and how an explosion in a basement made him stutter. “This is what the people of peaceful Europe should see.”
