D.fter Here I laugh from by Mario Martone with Toni Servillo, another film tells the story of the brothers Eduardo, Peppino and Titina De Filippo: The De Filippo brothers (at 9.30 pm tonight on Rai1, after a successful passage at the Rome Film Festival).

Directed by Sergio Rubini focuses on the childhood and youth of the three extraordinary actors that have revolutionized the theater, not only in Naples. The protagonists are three talented young theater performers (Anna Ferraioli Ravel, Domenico Pirelli and Mario Author),

An extraordinary opportunity to get to know a story of talented actors, extraordinary successes but above all redemption.

The De Filippo brothers: the plot of the movie

Naples, early 1900s. The three brothers Peppino, Titina and Eduardo live with their young mother Luisa De Filippo. There is no father in the family, or rather he hides in the role of “uncle” Eduardo Scarpetta, the most famous, rich and acclaimed actor and playwright of his time. Scarpetta, while not recognizing his natural children, introduced them to the world of theater as children.

On the death of the great actor, the legitimate children share his inheritance, while Titina, Eduardo and Peppino are entitled to nothing. To the three young men, however, “uncle” Scarpetta passed on a special gift, his great talent for acting.

The redemption from the painful family history passes through the formation of the trio De Filippo, a dream cherished for years by Eduardo and his brothers and finally realized, overcoming difficulties and conflicts.

That of the De Filippo is the story of a family wound that turns into art. And of three young people who, by joining forces, give life to a completely new way of telling reality with a look that reaches up to the future.

The history of the De Filippo family

Eduardo, Titina and Peppino De Filippo, to varying degrees and for different reasons, are imprinted in the collective imagination of our country. Peppino for the unforgettable duets with Totò, Eduardo for his theatrical plays while Titina for having crossed with cinema and stage class. But before being those “monuments” we know, the three brothers were a trio.

Since 1931, under the name of Compagnia del Teatro Humoristico i De Filippo, the formation has raged on all stages from the North to the South of Italy imposing three great actors and a new way of doing theater.

With the De Filippo, the arguments brought to the stage go beyond the tradition of Neapolitan theater linked to farce to take a more realistic path drawn from everyday lifethe. The new course undertaken by the De Filippo, more problematic and bitter, does not frighten the public, on the contrary; have a resounding success that will make them popular for decades.

But behind this “revolution”, there are three artists who are first of all three brothers with three different individualities and a difficult family behind. And it is the family itself the core of their history, because it is there that the problems of the De Filippo nestle, as well as the themes dealt with in their art and the seeds of their separation as a trio.

With a father present and absent at the same time, played by Giancarlo Giannini, the De Filippo they grow up marginalized, discriminated against but above all with a great desire for revenge. Which will lead them, especially in the case of Edoardo, to often address familiar issues in their plays. Making the most of the cathartic power of art.
