The DANA unloads with force in Castellón and lets itself be noticed in the south of Catalonia

The abundant rainfall which began to take place this Saturday in Spain and which have especially affected the Mediterranean coast, collecting nearly 200 liters per square meter at points in the province of Castellón, will continue this Sunday in the center and southeast of the Peninsula in the form of stormsaccording to the forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET)which has issued a new special advisory for showers and storms expected through Monday.

Isolated depression at high levels (DANA) that affects the Iberian Peninsula this weekend has begun to unload strongly this Saturday morning in the Valencian Community, with persistent and very strong rainfall in areas of the province of Castellón and the north coast of Valencia. Except for these most affected areas, the showers are widespread and intense but, in general, of short duration.

The first precipitations have left accumulated 185 liters per square meter (l/m2) in Borriol, 154 in Vilafamés, 127 in Pobla Tornesa, 63.4 in Sarratella, 41.8 in Vall d’Alba, 36.4 in Marines, 35.2 in the María Cristina reservoir, 21.8 in Serra, 15.2 in Andilla, 14.0 in Algar del Palancia, 12.6 in Valencia and 9.8 in Castelló de la Plana, according to the records of Aemet, Avamet and the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation.

As Aemet has explained, cloud systems and precipitation have shifted from south to north, driven by the mid-layer southerly guiding wind on the eastern flank of the DANA. Specifically, in Castellón the main movement has been from southeast to west.

The south of Catalonia suffers its consequences

The storm that this Saturday has reached Catalonia from the south and west has caused a small tornado in the Ebro Delta visible at least from Camarles (Baix Ebre) and has practically left 70 liters per square meter of rain in the Els Ports NP. The cold drop has also generated records of at least 54 liters per square meter in Mas de Barberans (Montsià), 49 in Gandesa (Terra Alta), 43 in Ulldecona (Montsià), although it has also rained in Ponent, the High Pyrenees and in points in the central and eastern Pyrenees and also on the Penedès coast.

The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya warns that there is a very high risk of heavy rain in Montsià, Baix Ebre, Ribera d’Ebre, Baix Camp and Tarragonès, and with less intensity in the rest of Terres de l’Ebre and the Camp de Tarragona.

However, it is believed that the rains could reach the metropolitan area of ​​Barcelona. In fact, it has updated this Saturday the special emergency plan for floods in Catalonia (inuncat), which on Friday entered the alert phase.

Instability also on Sunday

The AEMET points out that during Sunday it is likely that the DANA will be centered in the southeast of the Peninsula and that a humid and intense easterly flow is established, providing humidity of maritime origin and favoring abundant rainfall.

In that sense, there orange storm warning on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera and the autonomous city of Melilla, as well as in the provinces of Tarragona, Alicante, Valencia, Murcia, Madrid and Toledo.
