The city farm in the Emmer Rensenpark has permanently closed its doors. The farm had been in financial difficulties for some time.
The managers of the city farm write on social media: “Over the past year we have looked at how we could find an affordable solution for the foundation. Unfortunately, we as a foundation and municipality were not able to come together and today we permanently closed Akka’s City Farm.”
The farm is part of the Akka’s Ganzenparadijs foundation, which used the location from 2018 to care for old or rescued animals from factory farming.
Last year, the foundation announced that the farm was in danger of going under financially. The combined costs for rent, food and veterinary costs weighed heavily on the household budget. Moreover, revenues have suffered a dent since the corona crisis. Among other things, the number of donations decreased.
The foundation spoke with the municipality of Emmen (the building owner) about adjusting the rental costs and possibilities for subsidies. A definitive solution to save the city farm was therefore not found.
