The correctness of Marta Flavi, Maurizio Costanzo’s ex-wife

Noshe great wave of popular emotion following the death of Maurizio Costanzo, there are two details to report, which concern two women. Much has been written about the rudeness bordering on the impiety of the fans of Maria De Filippi who asked her for a selfie in the funeral home. They are indefensible.

But Maria was a lady. She understood that those people saw in her not just a television personality, but a member of the family; and she didn’t want to disappoint her audience, in the certainty that her husband would have done the same, or would have agreed anyway.

It hit me too the interview that Marta Flavi granted to one of our colleagues from Corriere della Sera, the very good Maria Volpe. Everyone remembered that the story between Costanzo and Flavi had ended in a stormy way, as sometimes happens in life.

But in death Marta Flavi was perfect. Not a word of resentment, only regret. We loved each other, but it couldn’t last, we were too different, for him work coincided with life. “I won’t go to the funeral, it wouldn’t be elegant. I have never had relations with Maria De Filippi, but I am close in pain to her and her children ». That’s how it is done.

I don’t know the background, but to me that interview seemed like a lesson in civility. It’s not easy to break up, and even more difficult to maintain good relationships. Nevertheless I confess that I have always distrusted people who spend their time badmouthing their exes. “That woman ruined my life” or “that man ruined my life” are phrases that should be banned from conversations and consciences.

When Costanzo said of Maria De Filippi: «I was looking for the woman in whose hand to die... I found her»

Life belongs only to you, and no one can ruin it for you; only you can do it. If you have allowed another to make your life hell, the responsibility is primarily yours. Then of course separations are always an unknown factor, and a phase of coldness, if not controversy, is sometimes inevitable. But then we must look ahead, go beyond, and say words of peace. Even more so when one of the two leaves, forever.
