The container of your fries or kibbeling will cost you money

The fries go in a sugar cane bowl. The frikandellen in a paper tray. The cutlery is made of bamboo. So it is possible, she says.

But the trays are more expensive to buy than those made of plastic. “The packaging is quite pricey, that’s just the way it is. But the rules are there and let’s be positive about that. There really are alternatives.”

Schiphorst has not yet found that alternative for the milkshakes. “This goes against our principles a bit, because we don’t want the customer to suffer from the rules,” she refers to a higher sales price. “But we have to ask for a waste contribution.” At the bottom of the receipt it is an extra 5 cents, regardless of how many milkshakes are ordered.

The entrepreneurs approached by RTV Drenthe do not see it as a good idea for customers to bring their own chip trays, for example from Tupperware, from home. The government is insisting on this.

“We are not going to do that, no”, Schiphorst also confirms. “It is also a whole administration if you have to keep track of when everyone brings something. Because which one belongs to whom?”

Bringing your own containers also goes against ProFri, the association of professional deep fryers. “No one is waiting for this, of course. We don’t expect many customers to do it. By accepting it, you at least comply with the regulations, but you don’t have to promote it.”
