The Temporary Scope Discretionary (ATD)
The Discretionary Temporal Scope (ATD) refers to the longest task that has been assigned to a person and refers to the decisions that the person can and should make according to their role and function. In other words, what is the most long-range decision you have to make? The ATD is, therefore, an indicator of the level of complexity of the information that a person has to handle.
As the ATD of the task increases, the more complex the work, the heavier the uncertainty and sense of responsibility become, and will therefore require greater processing complexity (CPM) to solve the task. . For example, managing two supermarkets is not the same as five, or updating the billing system is not the same as launching a new headquarters. The longer the period, the greater the uncertainty, the greater the risk and the number of variables that will have to be considered, and the greater the complexity of the position.
Complexity of mental processes
According to Schlemenson (1990), the placement of people in organizational roles must consider the consonance between the complexity of the tasks of such roles, marked by the ATD, and the cognitive complexity of the people who are going to occupy them.
From Elliot Jacques’ analysis perspective there are only four methods by which people process information.
- Declarative processing: involves a series of isolated reasons, without links being established between them.
- Cumulative processing: refers to a number of different ideas, but none of them are sufficient on their own to support your argument.
- Serial processing: refers to a sequence of reasons and each reason in the series establishes the conditions that lead to the next reason.
- Parallel processing: requires a variety of lines of thought, all likely to run in parallel and can be connected to each other.
The complexity of a task can be understood from an analysis of the ATD of the task (longest-range decision that a person has to make in their role) and the complexity of mental processing (number of variables that a person can handle).
