An honest civilian film

Adaptation of Bob Zellner’s autobiography: The Wrong Side of Murder Creek: A White Southerner in the Freedom Movement, The color of freedom And Written and directed by Spike Lee collaborator Barry Alexander Brown and producer of the film. It’s no surprise then that, after decades of editing Spike’s films, Brown really proves himself skilled at weaving smoothly and convincingly not only the great themes of the film but also the archival footage of the time. Not forgetting the skill in recreate the atmosphere that reigned at the time in the United States.

Far from easy rhetoricthe film thus gives us back the human and realistic portrait of a young man with his worries and its contradictions and that, above all, will have to deal with a sort of ethical “awakening” in some ways unexpected.

The color of freedom thus becomes not only a valuable tool from mandatory display in all schools but it is also somewhere between a history lesson and a “reminder” on the whole road that still needs to be done. Which, despite more than fifty years having passed, is even more necessary today than ever.
