The climate stickers might need a clear message

By Gunnar Schupelius

The activists live out their fantasies of doom at the expense of the rest of the population. That’s not allowed and it can’t go on like this, says Gunnar Schupelius.

The activists of the group “Last Generation” do not give up. At the beginning of the week, they paralyzed the city highway again. On Tuesday alone, 140 police officers were busy removing the glued hands from the asphalt. Desperate drivers were stuck in traffic for hours.

Also on Tuesday, the climate activists triggered the fire alarm in the Reichstag, which they then managed to do again in the nearby Paul-Löbe-Haus.

They think they are in resistance. They believe they have to fight against the state and its citizens, who are negligently jeopardizing the future. “I quit my studies,” said an activist on Deutschlandfunk. “None of this makes sense if it’s the end of the world.”

The climate stickers not only believe in the downfall, they claim that only they will save the world. Their fanaticism bears the dangerous traits of a sect. Therefore, they consider the permanent coercion of their fellow human beings to be completely justified. That’s why they don’t shy away from sabotage, as they indicated in the Bundestag.

It’s about a higher goal to which they feel committed. “We are society’s will to survive,” they write on their website (www.lastgeneration.de). “We still have two to three years in which we can still leave the fossil path of annihilation,” they claim, without explaining how this calculation comes about.

Their principle is blackmail: if the government doesn’t respond to their demands, they carry on. They call for an immediate ban on gas, oil and coal for heating, power generation and transportation. They do not explain how humanity is supposed to survive without these raw materials.

The activists have immersed themselves in their world and will go much further. And while the anger boils up in the affected population, the government is silent. In the reporting, there is a lot of understanding on the part of the journalists, according to the motto: “Actually, they are right!”

The opposite would now be true, the climate stickers need a clear message that none of their demands will be discussed as long as they coerce their fellow human beings and threaten sabotage.

Anyone who lives out their fantasies of doom at the expense of others must understand that this is not allowed. This protest by the climate stickers has a destructive effect and endangers peaceful coexistence. Stop it! And hopefully we can expect the judiciary to really condemn criminal offenses as criminal offenses.

The feeling spreads as if the climate adhesive were being handled with kid gloves. That’s not a good feeling.
