You rarely hear about them in public, while it is always about them in The Hague: civil servants. They regularly clash with politicians, such as the Supplements Affair or the issue surrounding former Chamber President Khadija Arib. Then it’s mostly about them. Because usually it is the politicians who can tell their side of the story, not the civil servants.
In these Hague Affairs they do get their say, extensively. NRC is in possession of unique tapes on which officials can be heard saying what is on their minds without mincing words. How they think about politics, and what dilemmas they encounter. Carola Houtekamer and Lamyae Aharouay talk about the problematic relationship between civil service and politics.
