South African billionaire Elon Musk says on Twitter that the “cis” prefix and “cis gender” are slurs, i.e. insults directed at some personal characteristic.
The cis prefix and cis gender refer to a person whose gender identity corresponds to the gender assigned to them at birth. Cis terms take into account the diversity of gender.
Musk compares the use of these terms to online harassment and offensive speech. Musk says using cis terms will result in “at least a temporary” ban from Twitter.
Musk is known for his attitude towards sexual and gender minorities. Musk has published content offensive to rainbow minorities several times on social media.
Musk bought Twitter last year because he wanted to increase freedom of speech on social media. To achieve this, he reduced the platform’s moderation, which caused the amount of hate speech on the platform to increase fivefold in just 12 hours.
