The Catalan Church, through the Tarragona Episcopal Conference and the archbishoprics of Barcelona and Tarragona, among other dioceses, has conveyed its condolences for the death of the emeritus pope, Benedict XVI, who they recalled was the one who on a visit to Spain in 2010 consecrated the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.
The archbishoprics and bishoprics have joined the worldwide message of condolences and have sent their condolences to Pope Francis, as well as to the family and people close to the pope emeritus, who died this morning after half past nine at the age of 95 in the monastery Mater Ecclesiae of the Vatican, where he resided since his historic resignation in 2013.
Visit to Barcelona in 2010
In a note, the Archbishop of Tarragona, Joan Planellas, has asked “all the parishioners, the clergy and all the communities to offer the Eucharist these days for the eternal rest of the good Pope Benedict.”
The archbishopric of Barcelona has recalled the visit of Pope Benedict XVI in Barcelona on days November 6 and 7, 2010 when, 128 after the laying of the first stone, the pope consecrated the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia.
Three visits to Spain
The Spanish Episcopal Conference, led by the Archbishop of Barcelona, Cardinal Joan Omella, has highlighted the “deep imprint” that Benedict XVI left on Spanish Catholics during his eight years of pontificate in which he visited our country up to three times and approved the largest beatification in history by proclaiming 498 Spaniards blessed.
