The cannabis experiment is now really starting in Tilburg and Breda

The much-discussed cannabis experiment will really start on December 15 after years of preparation. The trial in which legal growers will supply cannabis to coffee shops has been postponed several times.

The cannabis test examines whether purchasing can also become legal. The experiment kicks off with two legal growers who will supply coffee shops in Breda and Tilburg.

Minister Kuipers of Health announced earlier this year that the start-up phase would start with three growers, but the third grower was not ready on time. “To maintain support for the experiment, we have decided to deviate from the condition that at least three growers must be ready,” the minister wrote in a letter to the House of Representatives.

The suppliers may only supply legal weed to the coffee shops. But as an exception, coffee shops may also sell their tolerated products from old suppliers in the start-up phase.

Start-up phase
With the cannabis experiment, the government wants to determine whether legalization is possible. The trial will investigate the consequences for public health and crime.

This will first be the start-up phase in December, write the outgoing ministers Dilan Yesilgöz (Justice) and Ernst Kuipers (Public Health) in a letter to Parliament. Coffee shops are now allowed to sell weed, but not to purchase it.
