The Boss Hoss had probably imagined their performance at Bremen’s Weser Stadium on August 18th a little differently. Alec “Boss Burns” Völkel and Sascha “Hoss Power” Vollmer had been hired to sing the German national anthem ahead of the opening game of the 61st Bundesliga season. The reactions were mostly negative: whistles and boos hailed in the stadium – and a lot of mockery on the Internet.
The social networks definitely didn’t skimp on malice. “Imagine you are Harry Kane. You are playing your first Bundesliga game. You hear #BossHoss sing the German national anthem. You want to go home straight away,” writes a user of the short message platform X (formerly Twitter). The comments ranged from aching ears to attacks on cultural assets.
Another user criticizes that the national anthem is out of place in a Bundesliga game anyway – because you are playing for your club and not for your country.
Memories of Sarah Connor
The BossHoss nevertheless made a good face for the bad game – and thanked the audience after their performance. For many, memories of 2005 came up: Sarah Connor performed the national anthem in the Allianz Arena – and caused a lot of ridicule. The reason: Connor made a mistake in the text at the time, singing “Brüh in the light of this happiness” instead of “Bloom in the shine of this happiness”. Connor had apologized for her faux pas back then.
