THETHE BLUE CAFTAN
Type: honeydew ✦✦ 1/2
Direction: Maryam Touzani. With Lubna Azabal, Saleh Bakkri, Ayoun Missioui
Halim, a refined tailor from Salé, and his wife Mina they persist in running a shop where the rich ladies of the city choose precious fabrics to make sumptuous caftans.
Mina protects Halim from the customers’ impatienceunable to grasp the difference between stitch-by-stitch embroidery and department store designs. When Halim takes on an apprentice (for an art that no one wants to practice anymore) the balance of the ménage changes.
Maryam Touzani (who writes with her husband Nabil Ayouch, the author of the “scandalous” Much Loved) celebrates the slowness, the silences, the unsaid, the pride in a job well done and the languor of a whispered and forbidden love (in Morocco homosexual relationships are considered illegal and punishable by prison).
