Actress and lifestyle influencer Gwyneth Paltrow caused a lot of outrage on the internet – and now not because of the vagina scented candles with which she occasionally makes the news, but because of her bizarre eating pattern. In a podcast with her health coach Will Cole, she listed her “wellness routine”: she does intermittent fasting; replaces breakfast with coffee; take bone broth in the afternoon; goes to exercise for an hour and then into the sauna and then has an early dinner according to the paleo diet with lots of vegetables. “It is very important for me to support my detox,” she says after revealing her minimal eating lifestyle.
In her defense: “This was a transparent conversation between my doctor and me,” she says on Instagram. “It is not intended as advice for anyone else.” Thus the wealthy owner and influential face of the lifestyle brand Goop that sells health advice.
By the way, the podcast conversation took place while she was being given vitamins by drip on the spot. “I like a drip!” she admits. Her favorite infusion flavor is the hard-to-find substance phosphatidylcholine. “That makes me feel so good!”
Few influences are as contagious as diet culture. As a child who grew up chronically online, I still daily lick the wounds left on me by the many diet influencers. I tell myself that a white pistolet instead of whole wheat is not cheating. You can only cheat on food if you’re on a diet and I’m not, my internal dialogue sounds. But even a decade of “body positivity,” an emancipatory movement advocating acceptance of all body shapes, is no protection against food demonizing culture.
Shrunken derriere
Kim Kardashian, one of the most influential beauty icons of our time, is showing off her new slim body these days. The size of her famously sized derrière has been shrinking since last year. Her appearance at last year’s Met Gala in the ‘Happy Birthday, mr. President‘ dress by Marilyn Monroe was like a funeral ceremony for her curves that defined the beauty ideal of the past ten years. She indicates that she has completely changed her lifestyle since the gala and has lost many kilos as a result. There is little or no room for sugars and junk food in her new ‘healthy’ lifestyle, she says in interviews.
It is inevitable that the powerful influencer Kardashian will influence people with her new diet. And that’s what research shows The Green Amsterdammer and RTL News that if you like watching TikToks about losing weight, you will find yourself in a stream of videos about eating disorders, extreme diets and skinny women within half an hour. Figures from TikTok show that interest in hashtags about diets, weight loss and sports in the Netherlands has been increasing enormously for two years. It is to become despondent.
