The birth of the New Year’s Eve stunt: ‘We mainly do it for the quality of life’

“Our association was founded in 1994,” Heijman continues, “we wanted to combat mischief in the village a bit. It was actually a tradition to drag things around the village, but that increasingly resulted in fires and so we decided to form a New Year’s Eve association. to set up and celebrate a party centrally in the village.”

As a resident of Vledder, you can become a member of the New Year’s Eve association, but that is not for everyone, because the membership requirements could be said to be rather dated, to say the least. “First and foremost, you must be a man and be 18 years or older. Moreover, you must be unmarried,” says Sjors Heijman, who cannot explain why these conditions were even devised.

“At one point the plan for a New Year’s Eve stunt was devised,” the Vledder resident continues, “we thought we should do something together. It is good for the fame of your village and that is how the stunt was born.” It is striking that we mainly find the New Year’s Eve associations along the border of Drenthe with Friesland. There is no good explanation for this.
