– The big season of domestic greenhouse vegetables really starts this week, says the deputy executive director of the Finnish Garden Association Lassi Remes In the Kuppatutarliito’s bulletin.
According to Remes, the supply of various domestic tomatoes in stores will increase significantly this week. The grown crop of cucumbers has already been visible in stores for a few weeks.
– A good supply is of course also reflected in consumer prices, Remes assures.
On Monday morning, in Prisma’s online store, the price of a kilo of domestic tomatoes was 4.89 euros and 1.79 euros for cucumbers. For example, in Helsinki’s K-citymarket Easton, the price of tomatoes was 4.29 euros per kilo and cucumbers were 1.89 euros.
According to the release, the challenging winter temporarily affected the amount of tomato and cucumber cultivated, but now the exceptional situation is over and the spring season has begun.
Greenhouse vegetables cover about 30 percent of the fresh vegetables eaten by Finns. In 2022, approximately 17 kilograms of these product groups were cultivated per inhabitant.
