Sttanight at 21.30 on Rai 1 goes on air The best years, by Gabriele Muccino. Released in 2020, the film tells the ups and downs of a brotherly friendship born by chance and tested by life. Giulio, Paolo and Riccardo they meet as teenagers and, despite everything, remain bound by an indissoluble relationship.
The best yearsthe plot of the movie
The story of Gemma (Micaela Ramazzotti), Giulio Ristuccia (Pierfrancesco Favino), Paolo Incoronato (Kim Rossi Stuart) and Riccardo Morozzi (Claudio Santamaria) begins in 1982, when the sixteen year olds Giulio and Paolo meet Riccardo during an event. He’s hurt. They transport him to the hospital and essentially save his life.
An indissoluble relationship is born, which leads them first to spend the summer in the countryside at Riccardo’s parents’ house, then to share the most important stages of their lives. Ups and downs included. Gemma enters the trio. Paul falls in love with it immediately and a story begins between the two. However fate puts a hand in it: Gemma’s mother dies and the girl, already fatherless, is forced to move to Naples from an aunt.
The film jumps in time. It is 1989, Giulio becomes a lawyer, while Paolo is a professor of literature. Riccardo, on the other hand, tries to be an actor and meets Anna (Emma Marrone) on a set. Although several years have passed, Paolo is still in love with Gemma. She goes to Naples and discovers that she is engaged to Nunzio (Gennaro Apicella), a violent man.
The triangle between Gemma, Giulio and Paolo
The meeting has a disruptive effect. Overwhelmed by emotion, Gemma escapes from Nunzio and returns to Rome. She goes to Paolo’s house, but he is still precarious and lives with her mother. Some time later, Gemma wants certainties, she wants to build a future, but Paolo’s mother falls ill and the two are forced to postpone their plans as a couple.
Meanwhile Riccardo and Anna get married. At the wedding, a spark strikes between Gemma and Giulio and they begin a clandestine story. Giulio confesses the truth to Paolo and the relationship that has bound them up to that moment is irreparably shattered.
1993 arrives. Giulio is an established lawyer. Riccardo and Anna, on the other hand, live in a difficult economic situation. He tries to recycle himself as a journalist and Giulio arrives to help him. Shortly after, his first son, Arturo, was born.
Meanwhile Giulio is sucked into work and the relationship with Gemma begins to suffer. Also, she begins a parallel story with a client’s daughter, Margherita Angelucci (Nicoletta Romanoff). When Gemma finds out, desperate, she asks Riccardo and Anna for comfort. If, until now, Riccardo and Giulio had always kept their friendship alive, the lawyer’s behavior leads the way to important recriminations that put an end to their relationship.
A friendship stronger than the unexpected
In 1997 Giulio marries Margherita. Anna leaves Riccardo and one evening she meets Gemma by chance. Paolo is also with them, who has not yet gotten over the breakup. A few years go by and even the marriage between Giulio and Margherita fails. She is pregnant with their first daughter, Sveva, but they have nothing more to say. Riccardo tries to recover the relationship with his sixteen-year-old son Arturo.
Each of the three goes on with their lives, but chance keeps rushing to the rescue. Riccardo meets Giulio at the station, they organize a reunion in which Paolo also participates and the story picks up where it left off.
The model is We had loved each other so much
Three friends by chance, different from each other, and in the middle a woman, divided but in love with only one. The best years follows in the structure, pays homage to and is inspired by the great model of We had loved each other so muchby Ettore Scolafrom 1974. From the protagonists who replicate the quartet Nino Manfredi, Vittorio Gassman, Stefano Satta Flores And Stephanie Sandrelliuntil the failure talk of a generation made at the restaurant. Scola followed his protagonists from the partisan struggle in the early 70s. And where it left off, more or less, begins the story told by Muccino.
The best yearsthe debut of Emma Marrone and the actors of Muccino
The best years without the film debut of Emma Marroneas well as the beginning of the partnership with Gabriele Muccino. Indeed, after wearing the role of Anna, she was enlisted to interpret Luana in the Sky series Everyone at home is fine, in both seasons. Emma is not the only artist with whom Muccino has embarked on a long-lasting collaboration.
Pierfrancesco Favino and Claudio Santamaria have been professionally linked to the Roman director for over twenty years. Both, in fact, were in the cast of the film that consecrated them, The last Kissreleased in 2001, followed in 2010 by kiss Me again. Santamaria began working with Muccino in 1998 in donewhile Favino renewed the collaboration in 2018 with Everyone at home is fine.
In the cast, then, other recurring faces of Muccino’s films. Nicoletta Romanoff is back, who in remember me played Valentina Ristucciathe daughter of Fabrizio Bentivoglio and Laura Morante. Francesco Acquaroli (Sergio Angelucci) and Elisa Visari (Sveva)however, are Pietro Ristuccia and Luna Ristuccia in Everyone at home is finein the film and series, respectively.
