The ice creams made by hand in old Porvoo are made from real ingredients without anything extra. The taste comes from raw materials, which are also produced nearby if possible, instead of an excessive amount of sugar. For example, the mints for mint-chocolate ice cream come from a nearby farm.
Zum Beispiel started making ice cream when the restaurateur and chef Georg Simojoki got the idea to make the world’s best pistachio ice cream. While touring Italy, he noticed that it was not easy to find such even in a country known for its gelatos, because many ice creams were made from ready-made mass and the pistachio flavor was overshadowed. So I had to learn to do better myself.
– We need to understand what the raw materials require, says Simojoki.
In addition to pistachio, the selection of Zum ice creams also includes a wide range of other flavors. Try, for example, blueberry yogurt, mint chocolate and lemon.
3. Cakes, Cafe Gabriole

The number one destination for cake lovers in Porvoo is Cafe Gabriole, which is located in an old bank building.
The showcase of the cafe is full of the most delicious-looking cakes. The cakes are made on site and four confectioners work permanently in the cafe.
– Our cake sales are an important part of our business and we do a lot of custom cakes, restaurant manager Irmeli Veitkoski tells.
The cafe’s cake selection usually varies according to the seasons, but the list also includes perennial favorites that have remained in the menu for 25 years. These include berry tart, apple kinuski and chocolate princess cake, which customers want to keep year after year.
4. Breakfast or brunch, Runo Hotel Porvoo

A year ago, Runo Hotel opened in Porvoo, and its breakfast has garnered fame, not just fame. The hotel’s breakfast turns out to be perhaps even the best in Finland with its high-quality selection.
On weekday mornings, authentic Karelian pies are offered for breakfast, among other things – yes, authentic, not the ones that are usually offered at hotel breakfast tables. In addition, the tables have, for example, island bread, horseradish gravies, cucumbers, pickled tomatoes and feta, sea buckthorn shots, sour beet bread, delicious salads and fresh fruit.
