At the largest coffee festivals in Northern Europe, the Helsinki Coffee Festival was chosen on Friday 22 April. year filter coffees, espressos and black and green teas.
The winners were Edilson Mamian (Pink Bourbon natural), a Colombian coffee from the Pori roastery. Halo Beriti, an Ethiopian from the Lappeenranta small roastery, was chosen as the espresso of the year.
Helsinki coffee festival
– The winning filter coffee is sweet, fruity and sophisticated. All the fruitiness of the coffee berry is obtained from this coffee bean, it has a fruit candy-like character, describes the Pori roastery Teijo Villa their winning coffee.

– It is very lightly toasted, but extremely versatile. It is rich in flavor, milk chocolate flavor, wild berry, tropical fruit and rum.
The jury selected the filter coffees of the year from 13 different roasteries and the espressos of the year from 13 different roasteries.

The jury evaluated the sweetness, balance and aftertaste of the coffees and gave all coffees an overall rating.
The judges tasted the coffee blindly. The jury consisted of coffee professionals and influencers in the food industry. It included a restaurateur Markus Hurskainen, barista master and a specialty coffee consultant Jarno PeräkyläThe creator of the newcomer blog Juuso Viljanenand a restaurateur Maiju Åstedt.

All participating roasters made filter coffees in the way they chose in their wards.
– The filter coffee competition was even. There were many differences in the quality of coffee, ie the raw material, and its production, ie extraction. There was a lot of scatter in the espresso competition from dark to light toast. The winning coffees did best within the competition criteria, ie sweetness, balance and aftertaste, says judge Jarno Peräkylä.
In addition to coffee, the best black and green tea of the year was also chosen.

8 different teas competed in black tea of the year and 7 different company teas competed in green tea.
– The evaluation of the tea was challenging and the tastes varied greatly, says Judge Peräkylä.
Filter coffee, espresso, black and green tea for 2022 were chosen among the roasters and tea companies that participate in the Helsinki Coffee Festival and whose products are available on the Finnish market.
The filter coffee of the year was chosen for the sixth time and the espresso of the year for the fourth time, the black tea of the year for the second time and the green tea for the first time.
