The dean of Barcelona Bar Association (Icab), Jesús Sánchez, has criticized the “news sentence” in the detention this Wednesday of the Mayor of Sitges (Barcelona), Aurora Carbonell (ERC), in the cause in which it is investigated along with 12 other people for allegedly irregular subsidies.
“They do not take into account the importance of that presumption of innocence and the penalty of television news. The reputation of that person who has been detained is extremely important”, he said when speaking from the audience at the round table ‘Why do we still have to take care of democracy? From an “almost” judicial perspective’, organized by the Observatori of the Rights of the Persons of the Icab.
Sanchez has questioned whether it is necessary to execute the arrest warrant in this way, and in his opinion, in such a case, it would have been a court summons is enough and he does not see the arrest as necessary: ”That image has remained in the retina of all citizens,” he added about the arrest of Carbonell.
