The Attorney General renews Bañeres as Catalonia’s top prosecutor

The State Attorney General, Alvaro Garcia Ortizhas renewed to Francisco Baneres Santos as Catalonia’s top prosecutor and has proposed to Neus Pujal as chief prosecutor of Barcelona, replacing Cocha Talón, who recently retired. After listening to the Fiscal Council, which met this Tuesday, it has endorsed those two names. In addition, for the first time, a woman, María Luisa de la Hoz, has been appointed to the position of fiscal lieutenant of the Court of Accounts.

Bañeres entered the prosecutor’s career in 1985. He began his career in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and in 1993 was assigned to the Barcelona Prosecutor’s Office, where he served as coordinator of disability and economic crime services. In 2014 he was appointed lieutenant prosecutor of Catalonia and since 2018 he has held the position of senior prosecutor. At the head of this institution, he has had to deal with complex issues related to the unilateral referendum of 1-O, such as the process of the leaders of the ‘procés’ Josep Maria Jové and Lluis Salvadó and the investigations against the Members of the Parliamentary Bureau, as well as the two cases against the former president Quim Torra for not removing some banners from the Palau de la Generalitat and the trial against Laura Borras for splitting contracts when he directed the Institution of Catalan Letters.
