The Assenaar merry-go-round involved in the Venray fairground accident: ‘The attraction was in order’

The accident with a carousel in Venray in which eight people were slightly injured on Monday, is not the fault of fair operator Willy Seggers from Assen. Together with Johannes Bosma from Groningen, he owns the attraction, which was in the news because seats – containing occupants – hit a tree.

An inspection by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) revealed that the location of the attraction was unsafe. There was not enough space around the attraction to allow the device to run safely. The municipality of Venray suspects that occupants have pulled a tension strap on a tree. As a result, branches have ended up in the turning circle of the whirligig, reports 1 Limburg.

So Seggers is not to blame. “The attraction was fine, the municipality had made a mistake. We have not done anything wrong.” He finds the suspicion that fairground visitors loosened the tensioning straps. “When you’re on a roller coaster, you don’t put your arm out of the cart either.”

His fellow fair operator from Groningen largely agrees. “Everything has been approved from our side. There was nothing wrong with the whirligig, the tree was too close. I can’t say everything about it at the moment,” Bosma responds. RTV North.

The mayor of Venray, Leontien Kompier, found the accident a ‘damper on an otherwise very festive fair edition’. “Fortunately, there were no serious injuries, but the shock was considerable. That is why I have a good reason to look closely at the safety aspect of this measure in the future.”

The fairground attraction in Venray will no longer open after the incident.
